Thorium-228 in Routine Production

ORNL technicians Summer Widner, left, and Stephanie Timbs process thorium-228 in a hot cell.

The DOE Isotope Program is pleased to announce that thorium-228 is in routine production and is ready for purchase.

Produced at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, thorium-228 is used to make radium-224/lead-212 generators. These generators allow the radium-224 extracted from thorium-228 to decay over time and produce lead-212 and bismuth-212 for research on targeted alpha therapy, including metastatic skin cancers and neuroendocrine tumors with minimal damage to surrounding tissue.

For more information on the production of thorium-228 read the article on ORNL.gov.
